Description

This course is targeted at teachers who are interested in subject teaching in which all pupils, regardless of their language background, can participate through an integrated focus on (subject specific) language and language development. With the help of a range of practical activities teachers' related pedagogical skills and technological proficiency.will be enhanced   Participants begin by exploring and aligning their understanding of the concept of "subject literacy." They delve into the pedagogies of how dialogue can support learning. Participants learn about the key features of whole-class dialogue, dialogue between peers, and dialogue in curriculum subjects. Key activities include defining the aims and key indicators of dialogic teaching, with a particular focus on teacher-student dialogue. Videos will be analysed showcasing sample practices and delegates examine the potential of materials to support effective dialogue related to specific classroom activities, followed by reflective activities on participants' current teaching practices.  Insights are provided into methods and materials that facilitate learners to listen to, read, and actively use subject-specific language.    Participants explore methods for
  • observing and analyzing classroom talk and examine the potential of materials to support effective dialogue related to specific classroom activities.
  • the provision of language scaffolding, both planned and interactive.
  • planning interventions to encourage classroom discourse.

Learning objectives

The course aims to to equip educators with the necessary tools and strategies to address the language dimension in all subjects and promote subject literacy among their students.   By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Define and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the concept of "subject literacy."
  • Analyze and implement pedagogical strategies that support learning through dialogue, with a specific focus on teacher-student dialogue.
  • Define clear language goals as an essential prerequisite for language-oriented education and effective classroom communication.
  • Review and utilize interventions aimed at encouraging students to express their thoughts effectively, not only in everyday language but also in the language specific to subject areas.
  • Design and develop a dialogue-based, interactive lesson for a selected textbook topic or unit from their current curriculum.
  • Apply the principles of whole-class dialogue, peer-to-peer dialogue, and dialogue in curriculum subjects to enhance student language skills.
  • Implement various methods and materials to help learners listen, read, and actively use subject-specific language effectively.
  • Provide scaffolding for language in both planned and interactive ways, enabling diverse learners to excel in language-rich subjects.
  • Locate and employ open educational resources of related EU projects such as  'Inclusive science teaching in multilingual classrooms - a design study'  

Methodology & assessment

The course combines plenary, tutor-led introductions & viewing videos of exemplary classroom procedures with follow-up activities when participants do practical work individually, in pairs and small groups applying the concepts and principles presented by analyzing and discussing viewed practices, and/or practicing approaches involving specific technologies or applications.

Preparation:
Delegates are advised to bring your subject book(s) and/or related digital materials (if available) to the course to be used when creating customised materials and activities.

Assessment
At the end of the week delegates will demo, discuss and assess the teaching & learning materials that they created during the hands-on sessions.

Certification details

Personalised certificates will be made available for those participants who actively participated and successfully completed the various course activities and the final course product.

The certificate document includes the key course information including the number of tuition and learning hours and the main topics covered.
