SUSTAINABLE: Sparking Understanding of SDGs Through AI and Novel Approaches in Balanced Learning Environments

In an AI Driven era, teachers should adopt innovative educational strategies to teach the use and the ethics of AI through real-world challenges, such as sustainability. Thus, this project aims to empower teachers with these strategies and cutting-edge digital and AI tools to enhance their students' digital competences while exploring the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each month, based on an novel teaching methodology (PBL, IBL, Personalized learning, Experiential Learning, Collaborative Learning, Flipped Classroom, Game-Based Learning, Storytelling and Socratic Seminars), students will implement activities using digital and AI tools related to one of the 17 Global Goals and the relative International/World Day. Thus the project will be based on 3 axes: Sustainability, Innovative learning and Emerging technologies. By integrating emerging technologies into the classroom, teachers will create engaging, interactive activities that not only foster digital literacy but also deepen students' understanding of global challenges. Through AI-driven platforms and collaborative digital tools, students will develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, all while contributing to meaningful discussions on sustainability and global citizenship. The idea of this project is based on the ESEP online course "Unlocking the power of teachers' digital competence: Innovative teaching and learning strategies".

Global Goals Week - 7a Poland

Today we completed the tasks of Global Goals Week.

We watched the video

Goal1

...then in groups we were reading the comics and we tried to remember as much as we could....

Goal2

GOAL3

...because after that we answered some quiz questions about what we had learnt. Although we didn't remember all the answers, we learnt new things😊 and had fun while working in groups.

My students completed their "Global Goals Week" activities in 3 steps.

In step 1, they watched the "UN Sustainable Development Goals - Overview" video. They found the video interesting. They even asked me to share the link with their parents so they could watch it at home. I did.

In step 2, they read the "SDG Comic Book" and translated it into Turkish. This way, they learned more about the SDGs.

In step 3, they answered the SDG quiz and received their digital SDG Pets. My students really enjoyed receiving SDG Pets. Each student read the description of their SDG Pet.

September activities:students' questionnaires and SDGs goals.

We choose to discover the SDGs goals throught discussions and brainstorming using the 17 SDGs printed cards (the vocabulary of the english comic book was too complicated for our 5graders to understand). Next, we will test our knowledge with the provided quiz in the materials.
