According to a recent UNESCO report, 47% of national curricula do not address climate change and those that do often neglect action-oriented teaching methods. To tackle this issue, the Climate and Environment Association Europe (CERA), a Brussels-based NGO, developed three interactive climate change modules for 8–12-year-olds:

  • The science behind climate change,
  • Climate change causes and effects,
  • Let’s make a difference on climate change.

These modules are available in English, Turkish, French and Dutch, and include a range of hands-on experiments and classroom activities, along with teacher guides and background material. The first module, for example, uses food as a theme to introduce students to the science behind climate change. By discussing traditional cuisines, students explore where ingredients come from, and the environmental conditions needed to grow certain crops.

Teachers can integrate the modules in language classes, underscoring the importance of interdisciplinary approaches.
