New toolkit for teachers: help your students counter disinformation

As the information environment is rapidly changing in new and unpredictable ways, in some cases posing threats, media literacy skills are increasingly important for young people to navigate this fast-moving landscape safely.

Designed specifically for secondary school teachers and educators, the European Commission’s toolkit on ‘How to spot and fight disinformation’ provides you with valuable tips for teaching your students how to identify, critically assess and challenge disinformation, as well as stop it from spreading further. For example, the toolkit provides guidance on how to assess whether a piece of information is reliable and why.  

After engaging with this toolkit and the examples of disinformation techniques, your students should become more aware of the phenomenon of disinformation, the threats it poses and how to protect themselves from it. 

The toolkit, which is available in all EU languages on the Commission’s learning corner, provides a dynamic, ready-to-use presentation that features engaging videos and real-world examples of disinformation; it is tailored towards 15-to-18-year-olds. The accompanying handbook delves deeper, providing you with practical guidance for group exercises and in-depth case studies to stimulate critical thinking. 

As a teacher or educator, you can play a key role in amplifying the conversation about the fight against disinformation. You can use the toolkit alone or in combination with other complementary EU resources for teachers:
