Learning objectives

Definition of needs analysis

Needs analysis is the systematic process of identifying and assessing the needs of a target group or organisation. This process involves collecting and analysing data to determine the gaps between the current state and the desired state, enabling the formulation of targeted solutions and practical strategies to fill these gaps.

Importance of needs analysis

  • Strategic planning: needs analysis allows for a clear definition of objectives, identification of necessary resources, formulation of strategies for achieving objectives, and optimising resource allocation.
  • Improved effectiveness: through an in-depth understanding of actual needs, projects or services can be developed that respond more effectively and directly to the target group's needs.
  • Decision support: needs analysis provides a solid data and information base that facilitates decision-making and reduces the risk of investing in lower-priority or less effective initiatives.
Stakeholder involvement: the needs analysis process encourages active stakeholder involvement, promoting greater understanding and alignment between stakeholders.

Required skills

To conduct a compelling needs analysis, interdisciplinary skills are required, including, but not limited to, psychology (to understand human behaviour and motivation), economics (to assess financial implications and resource allocation), statistics (for data analysis and needs assessment) and risk management (to identify and mitigate potential obstacles to project success).
