Learning to be: Toolkit for assessing social and emotional skills at school

The ‘Learning to Be’ project was based on the premise that assessing learning in contemporary European schools should go beyond grading students’ academic performance and should include practices for observing young people’s personal growth, social skills, attitudes and other general competences.

The project team developed a set of practical methods that can be used by teachers with their students to allow them to become more aware of various social and emotional aspects of learning, support healthy personality development and foster positive relations at school.

Project’s main outcomes – available in six languages (EN, LT, LV, IT, ES, SL):

  • A toolkit to support classroom teaching, learning and assessment of social and emotional skills at primary and lower secondary schools.
  • During the 2018–2019 school year, a 6-month-long experimental intervention study was carried out in schools in the five project countries.
  • Policy recommendations addressing teaching, learning and assessment of social and emotional skills have been prepared based on the study results and the experience of the project.

The project was funded by Erasmus+ (Key Action 3) and it had eight partners from seven countries.
